It probably hasn’t passed you by that Lorde has made an impressive return. When it comes to the biggest stars on the planet, it’s hard to keep a secret and a release date leaked about new music, just a few weeks ago. And then there it was. We received a “Green Light”.
It’s always a bit deceptive when you’ve already seen the whole world respond to a song and you haven’t heard it yet. And in Lorde’s case, the opinions have been more than amazing. Some people went on to say this was the top of her ability as a songwriter. Wow! I don’t know if I am impressed, knowing she is only 20 right now, or really worried about her peaking so soon, IF this is true, of course.
So, while trying to play down my expectations, I watched the “Green Light” video. And I was sold. Like the rest of the world, I agree that Lorde made a majestic return. And you share what you love, so an interesting discussion with another music lover followed about the song. It’s always illuminating to discover how everyone experiences music differently.
I considered Lorde to have always shown influences of hip hop with electronic music mixed into it. With that, she’s made a great combination of something that refers to the 80s and angles of lyrics that are so fresh and so of today. I would’ve never expected anything from her that would sound remotely like ”Green Light”. It’s got house influences and it’s actually very poppy, so I take this song as a sign of her turning a new page. The other music lover just thought it was actually more of the same; in line with her previous material.
Again, I think Lorde has found a great angle for the lyrics and it’s even open to interpretation. After all, what kind of green light is she looking for? A sign to get back what she’s lost or to get over it and find release?
The song quickly got an incredible follow up. Just a few days after it was released, Lorde also released the audio for “Liability”, a beautiful piano ballad with melancholic vocals and confronting lyrics, in particular the part about the love she feels from people for being an entertainer and the fear of the future. Will they still love her once she’s all played out? Oddly enough, this song has received very mixed reviews, especially after her performance of both songs on SNL. I am, however, completely on Lorde’s team at the moment, whereas before I wasn’t all too sure.
