I always try to let some time pass before blogging about the same artist again, but some artists keep releasing really good stuff in between my blogs. I’m so well impressed by Lorde’s latest efforts. She’s just announced “Perfect Places” as her latest single. It will be released on June 16th, so it’s a little bit of a wait, but she’s already uploaded the audio to her YouTube channel and, again, it is a really great track.
I’m a sucker for a good beat. You can argue if the drums really make a track or not, or that it’s just supposed to support and lead the rest of the instruments instead of being the main ingredient of a song, but I like it prominently loud. And Lorde’s “Perfect Places” has got a great beat. The rest of the song is electronic, which is also good in my book.
Like most of her music right now, she’s written the song from her own perspective. It’s got the distinctive low notes and half notes that make her stand out from the rest. She could’ve easily taken the fully alternative road with her music and vocals, and go to a bit of a dark side. She’s got the voice and the look for it, but I love the fact that she’s got some positivity in her vibe, despite the fact that her album is called “Melodrama”.
It could just be hidden in the pace of some of her songs. You can’t say that it’ll really bring you down. Also the balance between low and high vocals, and the harmonies, are just perfect to avoid you a depression. And lyrically, she’s sounding so authentic , which is most surely also the case on “Perfect Places”.
In some ways, this song actually reminds me of some of her songs from her first album. It’s this sound that followed up her “Royals” hit, even though I find this song a lot easier to get into.
There are some people calling this song a party anthem, but I’ll leave you to judge that. I’m not all too sure I would describe it that way. I just take it more as a personal search of something that perhaps can’t be found at all. Lorde is just one of those young thinkers who’ll make you believe that there are people out there born with an old soul. Always interesting to see where that takes her.
