I think I probably said this in my last blog about Coldplay, about two years ago, but what on earth is going on with this band? What happened to them? I always thought they were the most boring band around, but ever since Chris parted ways with Gwyneth it’s like they just turned over a new leaf. Their sound turned positive, they acted out in monkey business, got Bruno Mars and Beyoncé to perform with them and, now, they have teamed up with the unlikely of musical partners, The Chainsmokers.
The song was a surprise release, at least it was to me, and is called “Something Just Like This”. Even though I used to think that Coldplay would always release something predictable (slow and melodic), this song has been an interesting twist to me for their sound.
What I think is such a shame of The Chainsmokers though, is that every song of theirs sounds the same and with Coldplay, they have made no attempt to actually create something original to them. It actually just sounds like they copy-paste their last song onto a Coldplay song. Before you think, I have a thing against The Chainsmokers, I actually like their song “Closer” (though it had to grow on me), but they haven’t progressed since that track. Everything else sounds just like that one hit (which led to them winning a Grammy), but you know I like artists who develop their sound further and they are standing still.
Their influence is undeniably present in this song – as it should be in a collaboration (duh!) – but it gives Coldplay a questionable upgrade to today’s pop music. I’m still not really sure what to think of it. I’m really at a cross road about this song. On one hand, I like it, and on the other, I think that Coldplay have kind of been forced to compromise on this song. It will be a big hit though ‘cos something like this is bound to strike a chord with a large audience.
