Finally! Lady Gaga has released new music. The much anticipated new single, “Perfect Illusion”, was released today and even though many have tried to fool us with fake leaked snippets, I seriously only heard the song for the first time today.
It is no secret that Gaga and fiancee Taylor are on a break and I can spot a heartbreak song a mile away. Gaga did the same I did, earlier this year: Work through the pain in the music, including the disillusion and frustration phase. It’s good to clear the heart and mind that way.
In light of that, I am so feeling this song and understand where she’s coming from, but on a musical level, I had expected a new sound from Gaga. There was such a difference between the first and the second album, but “Pop Art” showed no real progress and, on Gaga terms to that point, disappointed in sales.
Since, she’s been exploring jazz, so I thought somehow she would experiment further for her new stuff. There were enough reasons to think this.
Of course, “Perfect Illusion” could be the safe track that gets us all to reconnect to Gaga before she pops a surprise on us. Who knows! Expect the unexpected, I say.
To that effect, the song reminds me of “Bad Romance” in the overall, general feel of the song. It’s an electro pop song as you would expect from Lady Gaga, completed by the use of her voice, which always combines a bit of rock theatrics with pop.
On my second listen, I could sing along with the chorus in full and I think I’m down to knowing about 90% of the lyrics now, on my fourth listen. Gaga does exactly what she’s good at and I wouldn’t mind seeing her reclaim her pop stardom status, but keep in mind, there’s some heavy competition right now. It’s a very interesting time, right now.
