Justin Bieber's “Love Yourself” is such a cool song. I cannot believe I used Justin Bieber and the word “cool” in the same sentence. And I couldn’t believe it was his song when I first heard it. After spazzing over his stunning voice in the acoustic version of the song "What Do You Mean?" I told myself that I won't listen to another Justin Bieber song. Or if I do listen to one, I probably wouldn't like it. I have mentioned before that I'm not a Justin Bieber fan and I probably wouldn't be. However, a friend of mine caught me listening to Justin Bieber's "What Do You Mean?" and she started pestering me about this song called "Love Yourself", telling me that I should listen to it and that it is so much better. She then started singing some lines of the song to me, which was awful coz she was kind of tone deaf.
One day, I was bored and I decided to look for Justin Bieber's "Love Yourself" coz I thought I should give it a try. The moment he sang the first line, I was mesmerized. I still couldn't believe that the smooth and lullaby-ish voice is coming from Justin Bieber. I might have judged him too early. The lines of the song took me by surprise as well. I might have judged the song way too early too. I thought it was about a guy telling a girl to love herself, as in accept her flaws and hug her imperfections. I thought it was gonna be like a "What Makes You Beautiful" kind of song. I was dead wrong. "Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber is about a guy telling a girl (probably his ex-girlfriend) to go and F herself. In a nice, mellow and euphemistic way.
I read an interview where he was asked if the song was about “his own past experiences with a girlfriend” and Justin Bieber replied: "Yeah, it is but you know I don't want to make anyone upset so I'm not going to say it to the public." Way to keep the fans guessing! Haha!
This hilarious song, which Justin Bieber co-wrote with Ed Sheeran, is sugar-coated with a sweet rhythm and ballad, acoustic melody that would fool anyone who won't listen carefully to it. According to MTV.com, “the two wrote a song about how someone took advantage of Justin Bieber’s celebrity status to get ahead, but he didn’t notice because he was caught up in his job.” It's ingenious, in my opinion. And, of course, if you are a fan of Ed Sheeran, you would definitely feel the Ed Sheeran-ish vibe of the song. I just love how natural and stripped down Justin Bieber's voice is in this song. It’s as if he is simply talking to that girl. I wonder who the girl is. She certainly did a number on Justin Bieber. Even though he was singing in a calm and relaxed tone, he seemed to be venting out his angst and frustration with every word of the song.
I love how anyone could relate to this Justin Bieber song. I mean, come on. Admit it. Whether you’re a dude or a gal, we all had that ex that we loathed so much. This is the BEST “I-hate-you-so-much-but-I-don’t-wanna-sound-too-bitter” song ever. And you got to admit the line “My mama don’t like you, and she likes everyone” is like a big SLAP in the face.
If Justin Bieber keeps this up – great collaborations, awesome songs and relate-able lyrics – I am ready to be Bieber-fied. But… not just yet. I think I’m going to listen to the whole album first. I don’t like getting ahead of myself or anything. However, I have to say I am really impressed. Like what my friend told me, Justin Bieber has definitely redeemed himself with this new album.
