As The xx cross over into a dream pop sound, their latest music video 'I Dare You' is an ode to a California romantic, teenage haze. With notable stars present in the music video (Millie Bobby Brown and Paris Jackson) Brown's character acts as a bratty younger sibling who threatens to rat out her sister about skipping school. Paris Jackson is shown loving life as well as becoming romantically involved. The band shows up as this subconscious background noise for each teenager.
'I Dare You' is a close example of The xx's previous work with their debut album. A subtle hint of sensual remembrance at the hands of another. Both vocalists collaborate on this track to infuse their classic dynamic. Without fail, Jamie xx and Romy Madley Croft blend their sullen and soft vocals. Throwing the effortless need to retell adventures in love, as the listeners experience the moments in silence for the first time. In the video, we see young couples come together and embrace. For no other reason than they want to.
The video is shot as a modern look at teenage life. Or what used to be. The days where a school would be skipped solely to hang out with your boyfriend/girlfriend. Where a summer-like haze existed and everything from kisses tasted sweet.
The xx have an excellent skill with telling a story. I Dare You has repeated verses, yet each line deserves a steady applaud. There is nothing extraordinary about 'I Dare You' however, a sweetness does show up before the track finishes.
It should not come as any surprise that The xx are the brilliant minds behind a subtle, yet simple track. Without an overly used layering track or loop effect. The xx take hold of the more endearing moments involved in adolescent lives.
