Selena Gomez has been the talk of the town last week with the release of her new song “Fetish”. Slowly, but surely, I think Selena Gomez is getting to find her sound. Many credit her relationship with The Weeknd for this, but I think she’s been on this path from the release of “Revival” and it probably got a boost when she collaborated with Kygo for “It Ain’t Me”. The new song is a bit of mix between electronic music and r&b.
For Selena, “Fetish” is probably the most sexual song she’s ever released, but I actually had expected it to be way more shocking than it turned out. After the title was announced, I really was expecting something extremely bold, strange and probably more suited for someone like Rihanna, but the song is using the word ‘fetish’ slightly different than I expected. More like an obsession and, lyrically, it actually sounds like she’s playing with whoever is seeing her as the subject of his attention. There’s a bit of a power play there.
The song itself is actually pretty dope. I like her vocals this way. It’s half sweet, light, airy and the casual flow of it has made this my favorite release of a major artist, this week. I’ve found it easy to get into, pretty much immediately, and I love the music in the chorus.
Selena dropped the song with an audio video in which you mainly see her lips, while she’s singing the song. I thought it was an interesting way to drop an audio. Even the video has got everybody talking. Pretty much immediately people went wild over her freckles. I was stunned, recently, that teen girls nowadays paint freckles on their faces because it’s the trend of the moment to have them. I always try to cover up mine. Selena’s been accused of painting hers on and even make up artists are trying to dispute this. You can tell that people are concerned about major issues….
“Fetish” is the second single from Selena’s upcoming album and follows up “Bad Liar”. The expectation is that the new album will define Selena as an artist and make her come to her own. Maybe she’ll keep experimenting though. I have a feeling the experimenting is more her, than finding something to settle with.
