This week Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington hit back at fans, this one included, that have accused the band of selling out with their new pop direction. As well as comments that anyone who thinks that should stab themselves in the face, which he apparently said in jest, the frontman told fans to get over Hybrid Theory. Now I get why he feels that he needs to defend himself and his bandmates from these accusations; no one wants to be told that they are less than they were before, but the entire exchange seems to be focusing on the wrong reason why fans feel this way.
I first listened to Hybrid Theory when I was 13, it's a seminal album for me, an album which takes me back in time to that messed up pubescent mess, but that doesn't mean I think Hybrid Theory is the clasic that Chester deems it. I realise that many fans want the band to return to this sound but I don't. The real opportunity of greatness came with how to follow up A Thousand Suns, an album that showed the band at their most experimental, showing their most potential. My annoyance at this new, poppier, direction isn't about the need for Linkin Park to emulate their first album, but to continue the ambition shown on A Thousand Suns. So I've actually met Chester’s criteria, screw Hybrid Theory, get back to A Thousand Suns. I'm happy to figuratively stab myself in the face if it means that you don't crap yourself and run away from your ambition. The ball ius in your court Chester, what now?
