Chester Bennington was never shy about dealing with his problems through music. The reason myself, and millions of other fans are in mourning is because he gave us complete emotional honesty, and sincerity through his lyrics. It’s hard to think of one song that neatly sums this approach up; everyone has their favourites, even a song for every mood.
Yet, “Breaking the Habit”, from Linkin Park’s second album Meteora, comes the closest for me. It has Chester fighting to break out of a cycle of paranoia that has come to effect his life so terribly. He seeks isolation, accusing people of accsing him of being a fraud. Like many people who suffer from depression, he doesn’t know what he’s fighting, or fighting for. The threat can seem so bizarre because it come from your own mind.
Despite this dark subject, “Breaking the Habit” is ultimately about hope, its right there in the name. Like with many of Chester’s lyrics, he comes to realise and except his own responsibility for what’s happening to him. It’s a theme he would return to again and again, as depression is a cycle for many. Chester broke that habit for years, becoming the voice of a generation, helping Linkin Park to be one of the most popular and beloved bands of all time, and we thank him for it.
