On Thursday, November 17th, John Mayer released his highly anticipated single “Love On The Weekend” through a live-stream event held on Facebook. John Mayer first gained extreme popularity with albums like “Room For Squares”, “Heavier Things”, and “Continuum”, but ever since a few relatively recent controversial interviews and publicity mishaps, Mayer decided to remain low for a little bit. His last release “Paradise Valley” is about three years old so it has definitely been a long time since anyone has heard what he has been up to.
“Love On The Weekend” has received amazing support from both long-time fans and new listeners. Ever since Mayer hinted at the release of this single, people from all platforms of social media were raving and excitedly hyped up the song. The instrumental aspects of the song are quite poppy and modern sounding, but that’s almost expected of Mayer’s singles. Some people were expecting a more bluesy, funkier track like the ideas that Mayer posts through his social media accounts, but nonetheless the song lets fans know that John Mayer is most likely coming back to his original roots of acoustic, bluesy pop music.
The lyrical content of the song is intriguing because it’s very straightforward but has little hints of ambiguity. The entire song is about wanting to get away with someone for “the weekend”, but some of the lines make us believe that perhaps this significant other is more of a guilty pleasure than a sweet romance. “I hate your guts 'cause I'm loving every minute of it.”
In general, this is a very solid track and it definitely has sparked excitement for his supposed 2017 album. The instrumental is classic John Mayer and the lyrical content perfectly displays his typical, but always-clever lovey-dovey messages.
