I always seem to be asked the question as to what my favourite album is and who’s my favourite artist. For me, it’s a question that is impossible to answer. Not to blow my own trumpet, but I have a really broad taste in music and combine that with the fact that I’m really indecisive and you can see my predicament.
Where I can’t pick one stand out winner, I have managed to identify some albums that I simply couldn’t live without. One of these album is Where the Light Is: John Mayer Live In Los Angeles.
’Where the Light Is’ is one of my favourite albums for a number of reasons. For a start, when it comes to blues guitar, John Mayer is a cut above any other artist available at the moment. Well, maybe Clapton (who’s Slowhand at 70: Live at the Royal Albert Hall is also well worth a listen) comes close.
’Where the Light Is’ has a lot to offer the listener. The concert is comprised of three sets, beginning with an acoustic set featuring hauntingly slow numbers such as Free Fallin’ and In Your Atmosphere. The acoustic set lulls the listener into thinking they are in for a relaxing ride, before moving through to a blues set from the John Mayer Trio featuring crowd pleasers such as Wait Until Tomorrow and the excellent cover of Bold as Love.
Mayer rounds the set off with an extensive full band set, taking the crowd through the undeniably funky I Don’t Need No Doctor (also a strong finisher in my top 10 songs of all time), before slowing things down again with the beautifully slow rendition of Gravity.
’Where the Light Is’ is one of those albums that words does not do justice. It’s a live album that takes you on a journey, perhaps its the memories of train rides to and from university to which ’Where the Light Is’ was the soundtrack that evokes the emotions in me when I listen. All I can attest to, is that when I’m home alone spinning the vinyl, I can clear my mind and get lost in LA, where the light is…
