MTV released the news by posting a photo of the singer with her new blond look and dressed as an astronaut. The gala will be held next August 27 in Los Angeles, California
Pop star Katy Perry will host the MTV Video Music Awards at her upcoming gala, the channel announced Thursday.
Perry's was also the first performance announced for the awards, which will take place in Los Angeles on August 27th.
MTV released the news by posting a photo of the singer with her new blonde look and dressed as an astronaut, a nod to the awards statuette, Moonman, an icon used in the first commercials of the television network.
In a statement, Perry joked that he had begun "training in zero gravity."
MTV has experimented with different presentation formats for its annual gala, usually more remembered for scandalous incidents on stage than for award winners.
Miley Cyrus hosted the event two years ago, but by 2016 MTV decided to have several presenters over the night instead of just one.
Perry, the only person with more than 100 million Twitter followers, is competing for five MTV awards this year for Chained to the Rhythm, the iconic song from the album, which features a science fiction theme park.
The 32-year-old singer has three videos that have reached 1,000 million views on YouTube, led by Roar.
