What’s in a name, eh? Well, apart from sharing my name (minus the H) with this lady, I also have the love for music in common with Norah Jones. However, that’s also where the link between us ends. I love some of her songs, but not all of her music.
I loved her breakthrough album, “Come Away With Me”, but she lost me later in her career, but according to many sources it was time for me to reconnect with her, as her new, upcoming, album “Day Breaks” is reported to bring her back to her early days.
So, when new music by her was uploaded to YouTube, I couldn’t help but check it out and I’d have to say it’s been a lovely surprise. You see, the piano is my favorite instrument and that just happens to play a leading role in her new single.
Normally speaking, I would link Norah to a jazz sound, but with the new single, “Carry On”, she’s showing a little bit of blues as well.
That bluesy piano riff is setting the mood of the song, which is perfectly matched to the images of the video. It brings an authentic and nostalgic feel to it, like the old times are back. The piano riff is just not fast and spicy enough to make me think of New Orleans, but there’s no need to have it sound like that either.
From what I would expect from Nora, oops, Norah (force of habit), it’s an easy listening song that does take you away, but also didn’t keep me too attached to the song during my first listen. My mind started to wander, but I think that’s kind of what should happen when you listen to her music. It should lead you to dream away to thoughts, ideas, memories and just anything but the day you had.
Her new album is due for release on October 7th and will be followed by a tour across the States and Europe. Her last album, “Little Broken Hearts” stems from 2012 and had a bit more of a rock sound. The new album promises to be full on jazz music, as she mainly covers jazz classics with piano in the lead. Yeah, carry on, Norah!
