'Oh I know, oh I know/ same old thing, same old show': LA indietronica duo Electric Guest's "Oh Devil" acknowledges that it has the potentially dangerous and overwhelming temptations of desire as its (oh-so-familiar) subject matter. Vocalist/drummer/keyboardist Asa Taccone and bassist/guitarist Matthew Compton nevertheless provide a refreshing take on the perennial topic, putting the former's urgent falsetto and an unexpectedly biblical framing device to attention-grabbing use: 'Oh devil, I’m back for awhile/ Till I pick up the phone, look for your number and dial/ Oh devil, I made my own hell/ And deep inside I’m sure I got here all by myself'.
The synth-heavy track's upbeat, funky, kinetic and nostalgic production set up the perfect ambiance for a laidback summer romance, but Taccone's hypnotic vocals lend some ominousness to this typically hedonic prospect: 'Someone’s calling for me/ Something’s calling for me again'. Jamaican Reggae musician Devin Di Dakta then brings more otherworldliness to the table, picking up the pace to deliver the song's foreboding chorus with manic energy: 'Devil is back again/ Oh I know the devil is back again/ The devil is back again/ So I know I’ll never look back again'. And if you listen closely, you will register that the song's catchy-sounding Auto-tuned outro is not any kind of patois, but a sinister plea: 'Lucifer, Lu-Lucifer, Lu-Lucifer, I need your help'.
The accompanying music video picks up the narrative from the "Back For Me" music video, depicting the youthful-looking Taccone (who is actually 33 years old) as being fully cognizant of his sexual and romantic feelings. Comedians Neal Brennan and Will Forte lend some light-hearted humor to the music video, which features Taccone as a lifeguard at a local pool, in danger of being seduced away from his girlfriend by an attractive pool-goer.
