Separation Anxiety

"We made this the same way we did the Dear To Me video - with a lot of help from our friends. From the strip club up the street from my and Matthew’s houses, to me driving my own car, this was a family affair. All our friends came through for the club scenes & our boy Jesse Heath’s directing made it a smooth handful of days. Shout out to the girls at the club for making it so fun. One of production people asked me after the first day, “is this video about what to do when the illusion doesn’t fill you up? ..Or maybe it’s just a strip club video?” I didn’t answer her but I was glad those were the questions she was asking".

"Back For Me" follows "Dear To Me" as the second release from LA twosome Electric Guest's (vocalist/drummer/keyboardist Asa Taccone and bassist/guitarist Matthew Compton) sophomore LP Plural (2017) - which was released five years after their Danger Mouse-produced debut  Mondo(2012). It's more upbeat, direct and catchy than its predecessor, while drawing slightly from the retro-inspired trip-hop and acid jazz influences that informed their debut album.

Singing against a tapestry of heavy synths, bright guitar notes, insistent drum beats and a funky bassline, Taccone's falsetto vocals drip anguished melancholy onto a club-ready mixture of emotionally transparent indie rock and a heady disco jam:

'Watched you drive away, you’re back out on theRoadTried to make L.A., a second place for homeAnd I know we’ve got a thousand ways to goAnd there’s not much more I know I can controlAre you coming back for me?Hope you’re coming back for meNow you’ve got the time, remember who you areMiles and miles from me, I feel it though you’reFarAnd I know we’ve got a thousand ways to beBut it still won’t do until you come for meI always want you hereAnd I’m trying to find a reason but I only want toHearFor now I know I’m on my ownUntil the day you call me home'

Lyrics: Genius

Taccone appears to be appropriately morose in the music video, which cuts between a violet-hued strip club and scenes of mountainous wilderness. While Compton appears thrilled enough to 'make it rain' on a twerking stripper, all that flesh on display is not enough to take his mind from the estranged lover her pines for. Like Rihanna's "Needed Me", this clearly isn't meant to be a mere 'strip club video'.
