Like Scissor Sisters' "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'", Nashville indie quartet COIN's (Chase Lawrence, Ryan Winnen, Joe Memmel and Zachary Dyke) similarly titled “I Don’t Wanna Dance” is a song about not wanting to dance with an ironically danceable tune. While the song's lyrics are defeatist and self-deprecating ('I'll let you down/ I know it/ I'll let you down over and over ... I don't know how/ I don't wanna dance/ I don't know how to dance with you'), Lawrence's expressive vocals and the song's energetic new wave-influenced pop-rock instrumentation hint (albeit with some moments of jumpy anxiety) at the carpe diem/YOLO message that underscores their sophomore album (2017).
The accompanying music video, which sees the quartet strutting about Nashville in vintage-plastered suits courtesy of Manuel the "Rhinestone Rembrandt" (who has styled the likes of Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, Roy Rogers, the Rat Pack and John Lennon), visually emphasizes the track's brash melody and glossy hook while paying homage to the band's city of origin:
"We exist in a city (Nashville) filled with grungy rock music and country. In our latest video by director Daniel Henry, we focused on the juxtaposition of the New Nashville with that older, grungy/country Nashville. We wanted to shoot whimsical (and intentionally awkward) scenes in locations that showcase Nashville's history, but also exemplify the rising tourism we see on a daily basis." Ryan Winnen, PAPER
