Canadian indie music collective Broken Social Scene recently released "Skyline", the third single from their upcoming LP Hug of Thunder (July 7). It follows the similarly ebullient "Halfway Home" and the slightly eerie title track; all three were dropped last month.
"Skyline" strikes an epic, stadium-worthy atmosphere of optimism, balancing lyrical minimalism with a reverb-heavy production. There are hints of melancholy in the semantics of the song's repeated hook, but Kevin Drew’s voice and Amy Millan’s faint harmonies opt to foreground all the promises on the horizon (instead of playing up a sense of ambivalence) against a lush, triumphant and exuberant backdrop of keyboards, horns and a repeated guitar line:
'Skyline waits for the world
Skyline waits for the fall
But you shouldn't have come all
Because I know
You're never gonna be
No you're never gonna be that way'
