Haim seemed to be everywhere in 2014. Their debut album, Days Are Gone, was a terrific, if a little top heavy, mix of any genre the band were willing to try. The songs where about heartbreak, and moving on, not unlike their new single "Right Now". After what felt like an eternity, the band are finally releasing new music, not to mention having Oscar nominated director Paul Thomas Anderson directing the video of this comeback.
"Right Now" is a slow build of a song, something that matches the visuals as Anderson's camera drifts around the studio waiting for the next instrument to come into the mix. It's a great combination of sight and sound, and reminiscent of the simply shot, but complicate d meaning behind his work on Radiohead's "Daydreaming". The editing near the end of the song does rob the video of some of its magic but not by much.
The song itself find Haim in familiar territory. The instrumentation, lyrics, and changing tempo reflect the scattered mood of the songs main character as she deals with all of the contradictions, and conflicted feelings after an affair is ended. "Right Now" isn't exactly the sound of a band blasting back onto the scene, but more of a statement of maturity, of ambition, and of better song writing.
