After two well-received EPs and over 3 million Youtube views for "Bassically", Brooklyn-via-Argentina singer-songwriter Tei Shi (Valerie Teicher) is finally ready to share her debut album with the world. Crawl Space is to be released on March 31 this year, via Downtown Records. Exclaim!'s Sarah Murphy notes that the album, which was recorded over 18 months, reflects Teicher's transition from a "curious new kid on the block" to a "confident, self-possessed" artist: "the record delivers a "palpable physicality" — from the claustrophobic space referenced in the LP title, to active song names like "Keep Running" and "Lift Me," all the while evoking a feeling of moving forward through constraining situations and being able to centre oneself".
True to her fluid, shape-shifting form, "Keep Running", the lead single from the upcoming album, showcases Teicher's layered and delicate vocals with slightly more clarity, certainty, momentum and decisiveness. According to Teicher, the track serves as a sort of ultimatum in a relationship: "It's a kind of call to arms to someone you love, to take on and confront all of life's obstacles togetherr. To fight to stay together through thick and thin. A ride or die kind of love":
'Every time I look over my shoulderI’m getting olderI’m getting olderTime is so sadTie me to itStrapped to my sideNever look backBaby keep running, keep running for meChasing the things that you see in your sleepBaby, keep running, keep running for meDon’t hesitate, don’t make me waitIf you want my loving then you better start running(If you want my loving then you better start running)(If you want my loving then you better start running)'
Lyrics: Genius
The hypnotic accompanying music video, courtesy of director Agostina Gálvez, visually contrasts Teicher's dreamy vocals and the languid atmosphere of a late night party with a large tarantula - a potent way of triggering that fight-or-flight instinct.
