The 1975 never ceases to compell and explore the hidden meaning and truth. Their music video release for 'Somebody Else' embodies a whole world of self imposed public appeal. After entering a room (the male mime from 'Change of Heart') wipping clear of the face makeup and changing clothes, receives random applause here and there for his just efforts. And that is what the beginning of this video feels like, a huge effort to even do the most mundane task. However, the lead seems to be drained of any life energy we have been witnessed to The 1975 before. The select moments where the laugh track is used becomes eerie and down right haunting.
Slowly 'Somebody Else' focus turns on to Matt Healy himself. Seemingly we can gather that (for the moment) he is nameless, gathered into a corner of unfeeling territory and complicated emotions. No one feels like home or even familiar. Not even himself. Who always tends to be left alone and imagines all of these people, comparing them to someone else. When in reality as the music video moves forward either compares to himself or a piece of himself is missing. 'Somebody Else' has open a can of ideas, reguarding the standard structure of living in the public eye and relationships. What moves us, controls our fears, crushes are hopes and eventually what is looking right back at us? The 1975 have no fear about eyeing the possibility of something new, something held within uncharted waters. Facing ourselves in the most abrupt selcusion and altered events of our life.
Who will we see looking back in the mirror? More importantly who do we want to see and who will be looking back?
