The 1975 were formed in 2002 in Manchester, UK. They are nothing but another indie rock band from the Island who is labeled as alternative by music critics, albeit their sound is a combination of pop-rock, dance-pop, electro-pop and other dominant contemporary genre.

Up until now, they have released five EPs and two full-length albums. For a long time, they have been tussling with the name of their band. They were Talkhouse, Bigsleep, Drive Like I Do and The Slowdown until they finally crowned themselves with the 1975, one year before they dropped their debut album. The name is a reference to Jack Kerouac’s line in a book.

What’s interesting about their latest record is maybe only it’s name. I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful, Yet Unaware Of It is not a total flop in comparison with their debut. It is a decent release. As a matter of fact, the album was well received both by critics and among general public. Right before the release of the LP, they have decided to delete all of their social media profiles.

I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful, Yet Unaware of It was promoted with the first single called Love Me. The whole records has a prominent pop vibe, although these guys do not want to restrict themselves so they mixed it with dance, funk, electronic and indie. Still, we can be honest and call it pop.

It is clear that The 1975 want to expand their fanbase. Lead singer’s vocal is softened to the point that it does not sound rock at all. Songs are mostly love-themed with prosaic lyrics. There is no place for experimentation here. If I Believe You might be the most interesting track on the album, even though it sounds just like the rest. Still, I profusely enjoyed its jazzy appeal.

Change Of Heart served as the second single for a reason. So catchy. She’s American and UGH! demonstrate that just because the song is fun does not mean it has quality.

Final thought: There are at least 1975 band that sound just like The 1975.
