Sjowgren is an up-and-coming Bay Area trio (three high school friends who reunited after college to make music together) who caught the attention of music listeners and music bloggers when they uploaded 'Seventeen' onto Soundcloud and Youtube.
Back in June 2015, The Line of Best Fit's George O'Brien wrote about 'Seventeen' (as the Song of the Day), succintly describing the song's stellar production value and feel-good appeal: "From its fuzzing opening piano chords, the track builds into a rip-roaring indie smash thanks to its hand-clapping rhythm, driving bass line and gorgeous layers of vocals." Jacob Moore of pigeonsandplanes.com also took note of the track's instant appeal: "With crunchy guitars, confident vocals, a big hook, and great contrast of loud and quiet moments, “seventeen” is guaranteed to be in heavy rotation this summer".
The song is sung from the perspective of an ideal significant other, who promises to give the listener the space or time he/she needs before they take their relationship to the next level:
"If you want a second to breathe
I'll give you all of my love/ I'll give you all that you need
Don't worry I'm not in a hurry
Not going nowhere/ I'm not going nowhere"
The atmosphere is heady and blissfully optimistic about future possibilities, while acknowledging the challenges and pressures of daily living: 'Life can deal some crazy things/ But don't worry don't you worry we'll find it'. The lyrics definitely operate within the tradition of the carpe diem song, with a promise made sweeter by the synergistic relationship between the lyrical persona and the significant other.
The music video for 'Seventeen' should be in the midst of completion at this point; its release should propel Sjowgren into the eardrums of music listeners worldwide.
