LCD Soundsystem has come back around this time with new single and music video Tonite, where a 1980's heavy laden vibe is vocal. This dance floor creation seems to be a statement towards LCD Soundsystem's ultimate 360 coverage based on the band's catalog of songs because Tonite rounds back to the beginning of LCD Soundsystem.
James Murphy's familiar vocals charter throughout and with little effort, Tonite comes off as a fluorescent start towards happier times. Is this due to the state of politics and Murphy suspected a dance number was in order? Unsure of Murphy's distinct contribution to lightening up the sorrowful atmosphere, Tonite puts a needed groove in your step.
However, in true Murphy fashion Tonite is a reflective lyrical track where musings such as mortality, overly used topics and conversations about death. I've always found the songs where the beat was hypnotic and entertaining, while the lyrical content was focused on sullen and serious questions everyone tends to think about at night before going to sleep. Murphy is not so much acting a voice of reason, instead, Murphy is channeling the conversation many of us have shared.
LCD Soundsystem have been around and at some point in (never factor in age) everyone's life has come across a Soundsystem song. Whether in a film, at a party, or a book store Murphy's voice echoes out. Don't get me wrong there are many artists who are easily recognizable based on their repertoire.
One other thing Murphy is contributing without fault is the age factor. Sadly, this comes up with musicians who have been in the music industry for some time, although Murphy who is now in his late 40's shows no signs of stopping.
Nonetheless, LCD Soundsystem offers a precise antidote to all things complicated and reflective by having a sick bass beat drumming behind the words, reverberating around in your mind.
