LCD Soundsystem have finally released new material after the much hyped reformation and both songs showcase the amazing, and self-indulgent tendencies that made them so brilliant in the first place. "Call the Police" is LCD at their best, a rumbling building composition shot through with 80s new wave, some disco, and a little prog to temper everything. James Murphy's lyrics, such as "We don't waste time with love", show the frontman at his anthemic best. It's a tremendous song, maybe the most exciting electronic song I've heard for a while, considering mist are down tempo these days. It sounds like what would happen if David Byrne fronted Jane's Addiction, which is the type of explanation that could only come into my mind when Murphy is bashing it.
"American Dream" is on the other end of the spectrum. Slow and very deliberate, it's not even in the same league as "Call the Police" but Murphy does give it some personality with his tale of multiple woes. Unfortunately the music is a little boring, a little plodding. Where the seven minutes of the first song flew by, it's hard not to feel every single second of "American Dream". Where "Call the Police" was a pulverising flight of technicolour aggression, "American Dream is self-indulgent and dirge-like.
