For the first time in 2 years, The Veronicas have released new music. Last month, word got out that the two Australian sisters would be appearing as coaches on The Voice Australia, which usually already means that an artist has got something cooking.
The twins broke through internationally with “Untouched” in 2007, which so far has been the only international hit they have had. However, they are one of those groups that only needed one single, one hit, to persuade the critics.
The Veronicas have stayed critically acclaimed throughout the years and their first hiatus, from 2012 to 2014 was way too long for most of them. The girls returned phenomenally then with the extremely beautiful “You Ruin Me”, a dramatic ballad. This time, they are returning with a full blown electro-pop/edm track called “In My Blood”.
Fully in red, the video shows the girls looking edgy, slightly alternative (as always) and bashing some stuff.
Musically, the song wouldn’t be all that unique if sung by anyone else, but the Veronicas are completely tuned into each other vocally, which is easy to miss. Perhaps it’s due to the fact that they are twins, but they are vocally as strong as singers, but what they tend to do in their songs is harmonize with subtlety throughout a song.
In “Untouched” you can hear there’s a low second voice singing along with the lead. There, you may have missed if, because this turned down a lot, but it is a little trick often used to make a lead vocal sound fuller.
“In My Blood” repeats this trick with a high second voice, but the volume of that is turned up to be heard a lot more than in “Untouched” (even though it is absolutely crazy to draw comparison between the two tracks anyway). This combination makes it sound surreal almost. It’s the sound that makes this song stand out and catch your attention. It’s what makes it work. If it wasn’t in there, the song would’ve been predictable.
For the first time in years, the track has been picked up internationally. Though just released, it is looking like this return could be bigger than the one before. Maybe they will be back 4ever.
