During the days of songs like “Buddy Holly”, “Undone – The Sweater Song”, and “Say It Ain’t So”, Weezer brought that alternative sound we all used to love. I especially loved the guitars tearing and shredding it up throughout the song or on a solo number. In the past few years, when people would mention about listening to alternative music, I remembered the days of Weezer along with a few other popular names in the music industry under that genre.
Weezer’s sound and style always had somewhat of a “tear through” effect for me. When I would hear just a few licks or even a complete riff on the guitar, I always had that feel of ol’ school smashing something. Okay, okay, I wouldn’t actually do it but I think you get what I mean. The power and energy was definitely there. The lyrics that went along with their sound definitely told a story or mood you can be moved by.
Weezer’s new song “L.A. Girlz”, seems to bring it all back. All the ingredients are there for the enjoyment of their sound and style. Right off the bat, it reminded me of their song “Buddy Holly”. It wasn’t so much the sound of the song as they are obviously very different. Maybe, for me, it was the start of the song and how the guitars just came right in. I don’t really know or maybe it was just my own personal expectation of their delivery in their own style in alternative. “L.A. Girlz” is definitely fun and enjoyable, like the good ol’ times.
The music video shows a young boy enjoying his day at the beach and being as much as a kid as he could be. He posts on social media and dances around a lifeguard tower. It suggests he is actually meeting somebody there. With surprise, it is an older and muscular woman but who seems to enjoy life with a sunny disposition. The two enjoy their time together as they play like kids. It’s like they are both carefree and are just enjoying each other’s company. It is as if they both made a nice and caring friend.
