I was sent a link to preview Rachel Foxx's third EP, before it’s release. This was a while ago, but I only got to it ater this EP got its release. Actually, I was just looking for some music to play, while I was working and I decided to give it the soundcloud link a try. I’m glad I did. The girl offers a great catalog of music to work to. :)

Her music clearly shows influences of jazz, quiet storm and neo soul, but her lyrical delivery make it very contemporary. It brings an R&B flavor to it that makes it come full circle. It suits the 23 year old like a comfy glove.

Her 7 track EP, “Flame”, continues where her previous EPs have left off, but you can hear her growth. The music is maturing. Some of her previous material combined soul with influences of electronic music.  Just listen to “Love and War” from 2013. This is not gone – her music would still work for the clubs – but it’s not as present now either. Sounds like she’s defining, or rather fine tuning, her musical identity as an artist.

The EP kicks off with a freestyle called “Daydream” . It probably is the least put together track of the EP, but considering it’s a freestyle, it's really really good. The changes between verses and hooks are bigger on other songs and some songs have a more commercial sound (if I may call it that). Her voice is rhythmic, flexible and easy going, and so are her melodies. There’s a casual, mellow flow to it with a happy vibe.

“Happen To Me” is a track that stands out for me, because I just love that funky disco sound. It’s smooth, groovy and just fun and happy. Great for this year’s summer jam.

Another favorite for me is “Don’t Be Shy” (not to be confused with Kule T’s “Don’t Be Shy” which was featured in my last music blog. It just must be a popular topic). Rachel’s “Don’t Be Shy” is very rhythmic and I, very slightly, feel there’s a hint of dancehall in it. It’s just got this great vibe, while “Wish” is almost a retro pop song.

The EP also has a slight 90s throwback in it. "Mistress" was chosen as the lead single, and the single version features Don-E. You may know him from his only hit,"Love Makes The World Go Round". The song, "Mistress" also recycles "Touch Me, Tease Me" by Case, featuring Mary J Blige, which was used for the movie The Nutty Professor (1996 version).

Go ahead and listen to this EP if you like smooth soul sounds on your laidback Sunday!
