Alabama Shakes is a one-of-a-kind band that embodies an old time southern rock with a modern day instrumentation style. I had the pleasure of seeing this group open for Paul McCartney at Lollapalooza this past year. I thought they would just be another group I’d have to sit through before seeing Sir Paul. This band blew me away. A heavy set, dark skinned woman walked out onto the stage and had a voice that can only be described as powerful. “Joe Live from Austin City Limits” replicates that immense feeling of power that I felt that day.
“Joe Live from Austin City Limits” is a downtempo, yet exiting track that takes you up peaks and valleys as you listen. Alabama Shakes’ use of dynamic contrast is what gives their music that captivating edge. You can hear the pain in lead singer Brittany Howard’s voice as she sings, “Don't leave me on my own, Cause I still ain't got what I want.” I enjoy listening to their live performances even more than their studio work, because you can hear the crowd interacting and cheering when Howard hits a high note.
If you haven’t checked out this band, this would be a great introduction track to their music. You will fall in love with their distinctive roots rock sound and the intensity that each song holds.
