Will The Gentle Cycle Find Their Spot

I am a witness of the unfair phenomenon in music world - a huge number of new musicians and albums do not get the attention they deserve, in spire of undeniable quality they bring to the table. One of these cases are The Gentle Cycle, psych rock band from San Jose, comprised of Derek See (guitar/vocal), Maxwell Borkenhagen (guitar, metatron), Todd Flanagan (bass), and Craig Heitkam (drums).

The Gentle Cycle have released their self-titled debut at the end of January of 2017. According to them, it was recorded with vintage paraphernalia, in old school recording style, all with the aim to create a relevant rock 'n' roll anachronism. Full-blooded melodic psychedelic guitar lines influenced by the 60s and supported by sturdy rhythm section in Follow The Light open this album. Following songs keep us in the same era. Shell and Spells bring a bit more of a garage rock sound, while You Like brings a more obscure atmosphere.

After a surprisingly good pop number Love is the Plan comes acoustic Ways of Decay that takes us through psych folk country environment. Far Beyond is lead by motoric drum rhythm intertwined with two guitar lines. My favorite is She Comes This Way, pained with melodic vocal and psych blues guitar sections. This stellar album ends with atmospheric acoustic tune New Day.

Unfortunately, we live in the days when marketing and social media play bigger role in the success of musicians than their talent. Quasi hip-hop and generic pop artists are promoted as idiosyncratic artists, so I won't be surprised If The Gentle Cycle do not find their spot easily.
