Every time I like a song by rock band Imagine Dragons, I think it’s a song that is so out of character for a rock band. It’s beginning to paint a picture for me that something’s a bit off and that maybe I shoud start paying a little more attention.
It happened when I liked “On Top Of The World”. This song is way too fluffy, cheerful and upbeat for a rock band. And, now, happening again with their current release, “Thunder”.
I’ve been hearing this song for a while now, but would’ve never credited it to the Imagine Dragons. I thought it was some upcoming new rapper / singer, so I was pretty surprised when I saw the artsy video. I love it.
It all makes better sense now. There’s an interesting mix of hip hop, r&b and rock in this song. I think it’s the first time I’ve heard people use the high pitched vocals on something with a rock influence and the Imagine Dragons have pulled it off really well, maintaining the integrity of a tough sound throughout the song.
Of course, the band are actually quite known for their innovative cross genre rock music and have even been awarded for this.
I already liked the song, “Thunder”, but the video, with the black and white shots and the dancers (or posers) with the crazy looks remind me of a couple of videos from the past like Madonna’s Justify My Love, Neneh Cherry’s “Under My Skin”, Michael & Jane Jackson’s “Scream” and many more, come to think of it. The people on the buildings, therefore, remind me of a building I’ve recently seen while traveling in the media harbor (medienhafen) in Duesseldorf, Germany. There’s one building there that has basic colored figures climbing on and away from the building. It’s looking a lot like the shots in this video.
The “Thunder” video has actually enhanced my preference for this song. That doesn’t happen too often.
While the song has been out here for some time now (I actually feel pretty bad for leaving it lying around for too long before blogging about it), it will just be released in other parts of the world in September and it’s been reported it’s going to get some heavy promotion. So get ready, there’ll be no escaping this song.
