'How Did We Get So Dark?' the latest sophomore album from Royal Blood gives us the question within the album title. Certainly 'Lights Out' is a bit heavier (on the darker side that is) when it comes to fueling out a bit more anger than their debut 'Royal Blood'. Is this a welcomed progression... yes, an incredibly welcomed course that Royal Blood will venture towards a bit more... hopefully.
'Lights Out' uses a combo of searing guitar riffs, a fantastic drum beat that epically escalates towards the end, and the best aspect... you cannot even tell that Royal Blood is a duo. 'Lights Out' sounds as if there happen to be five to six different people in the band collectively chipping in to add a bit more on the reverb.
Ben Thatcher and Mike Kerr attribute a varied differed style to today's modern Indie Rock collective. Royal Blood does not sound like any other band out right now and that is a great thing to be a part of or create. Kerr and Thatcher capture the immediate attention once 'Lights Out' starts playing. While I've had the track on repeat since it's release yesterday April 16th, 2017, one can not help but be compelled to share with others. This is the point, Royal Blood has done a job well done because I actively want to share this track with everyone I know and then some.
"My eyes are still burning red, so turn the lights out." Lyrically the song has a hook and catches rhythm. Flowing as this expertly crafted river of liquid words, all which happen to be wrapped around the beat provided by Kerr and Thatcher.
After surpassing the first track release of their sophomore album, no need to brand this duo a slump. What is in store this year as far as concert wise? The energy simply will be magnetic.
