Birchville Cat Motel - Siberian Earth Curve

Birchville Cat Motel is a one-man experimental noise rock/psychedelic rock/noise/drone band from Wellington, New Zealand. The band has been active ever since the 1990s, and has released a pretty large number of awesome albums though the years. The album under view here is ''Siberian Earth Curve'' - an album that was released way back in 1998.

The first track on ''Siberian Earth Curve'' is titled ''Snakes Bark Maple'' and it essentially packs some pretty consistent drones throughout its mighty duration of over 17 minutes. These somewhat static drones are interrupted at times by some guitar sounds barging in. Guitar sounds that at times sound like seagulls passing overhead, while at other times sounding like something out of Keiji Haino's improvisation. Nevertheless the keyword with regard to this track is surely constant drones. The second track on this album is titled ''Lux'', and this one again packs some murky drones, although this time in a more open ambient kind of way. Thus this ambient drone sounds rather upbeat to me, while at parts there still seems to be some bits that sound like seagulls overhead. The noisier ''Fake Fur Pond'' on the other hand sounds a bit like some Skullflower albums. Namely something like a more positive version of ''Black Wind'' from ''Tribulation''. ''Trinity High Water Mark'' also moves in a similar pattern, while the album comes to an end with the title track ''Siberian Earth Curve'' - a track that feels like constant suspension. Like something is imminently about to happen. Nothing happens though since the track slowly drones out of its suspension back into silence.

All in all ''Siberian Earth Curve'' is suitable for anyone who is into cosntant drones or experimental noisy material in the vein of ''Tribulation''. It has its Skullflower moments, while it also has its Japanese psych avant-garde bits hidden away in the midst of constant drones.
