The Dead C are a renowned noise-rock band from New Zealand, and their discography is quite vast and admittedly as diverse as it is vast. Their albums have included anything from obscure avant-garde guitar improvisations to noisy garage rock/noise-rock, as well as noisy psychedelia. Some of their material is more approachable, while some of it is made for someone who is fascinated by drone and noise infused avant-garde garage rock soundscapes.
''Future Artists'' was released by Ba Da Bing Records back in 2007 and the album starts off with a track titled ''The AMM of Punk Rock'' - a track that essentially packs some rather quiet drone infused feedback with an odd guitar creak put into the mix every now and then. Sometimes the track even includes some distortion laden guitar sounds, while the track ends with the sounds of a helicopter taking off somewhere in the distance while the person hearing those sounds is under the influence of acid, only for these sounds to change into a distant hum of construction works. The second track ''The Eternity'' offers even wider soundscape horizons with its rather The Dead C'esque drumming and equally The Dead C'esque guitar improvisation. The track even has some catchy parts to it. The third track ''Garage'' sounds a bit like bluegrass improvisation in the vein of Henry Flynt. Only that it doesn't sound like that very much, since sometimes the track feels like you are listening to bluegrass while avant-garde ''black metal'' in the vein of Book Of Sand constantly interrupts this attempt of bluegrass. ''The Magicians'' on the other hand puts forth some astonishingly catchy noise-rock. Something that has become essentially synonymous with The Dead C over time. The last track on the album is titled ''Macoute'' and this one is all about persistant drones from start to finish. Sounding something like hearing the sound of different kinds of insects on a warm summers eve, with the insects being connected to some form of distortion effects or having been circuit-bended.
All in all 'Futre Artists'' is a pretty good The Dead C release, and the album packs one of my favorite The Dead C songs as well. The album suits anyone who is looking for some catchy garage rock, while also for those who are searching for something totally different.
