I have been listening to the killers ever since middle school, but I was never really able to appreciate them as much as I do now. I feel like good music is most definitely a matter of perspective. What I mean by that is you listen to whatever surrounds you. If you have grown up in a more rural area or in the country side than you are statistically more likely to listen to country music, a more urban environment might prompt techno or rap.
But why is this relevant to a blog about the Killers? Well, I experienced exactly what I described above. I listened to Brandon Flowers in middle school but I couldn’t appreciate it because my family listened to Christian contemporary music and I didn’t have access to my own mp3 device or vinyl. I am not complaining about my childhood, but when you are able to leave that bubble you are able to discover a whole new world of music.
Whenever I listen to music I tend to listen to the entire album all the way through before delving into each individual song. Doing this allows me to get a feel for what the artist is trying to communicate, where he is coming from, what his struggle is, why he is making such music. In my opinion, it allows me to appreciate the music much more than if I were to only listen to one of the hit songs on the album.
“Battle Born” is a great album because of its mixture of melody and lyrics. I can listen to instrumentals anytime of the day, in fact sometimes more than normal, but lyrics bring more life to the story being told. The Killers are a group of geniuses when it comes to lyrics, they know how to stitch a story together through their words and their instruments. I highly recommend listening to this album, it’s one of my favorites.
