Kings of Leon is an American rock band that formed in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2000. The band is composed of brothers Caleb Followill in charge of lead vocals, rhythm guitar, Nathan Followill in charge of drums, percussion, and backing vocals and Jared Followill for bass guitar and backing vocals, with their cousin Matthew Followill lead guitar and also backing vocals
In early times the band was with Southern rock and blues influences, but it has gradually expanded throughout the years to include various of genres and a more alternative, arena rock sound. One of the songs that made them who they are now is the song “Use Somebody”.
This is a song with rich vocals and sound. The song is really soulful. It dives deep into your soul, especially when there is an emptiness within you and you are longing for that single person.
I feel it is about being on the road, and even though you have the attention of being in a band and seeing all these new places you feel really alone, because you feel like you don't have that special someone with you and you see it all around you in the places you go and play at, like you will see the love people have between one another and it makes you want the same, but you can't because music career has to come first when you are in a fulltime band.
I personally think this is one of the greatest rock songs of our time. It is filled with the beautiful sadness mixed with the feeling a longing for the apparently out of reach. The chorus with the background vocals is just amazing intense. Another reason it is perfect for our time is because many highly intelligent people in our society are in the same torturous boat as him. Trying to break free and live their dreams, while desperately looking for somebody, anybody to help them out of their hole usually with disastrous results. Just one step away from learning that with a little self-esteem and confidence they can remain true to who they are, pull themselves out of their rut and liberate their life from the tyranny of their mind.
Sometimes, it is not enough to only focus your goals on a career or a job that may be satisfying at first but later will give you headaches and intense longing for other intangible things. We all could use somebody and we all could use King of Leon’s song to realize beautiful things.
