Kings Of Generic

With refreshing garage rock, they attracted the world’s attention, whilst by commercializing their sound, Kings Of Leon have become one of the most important bands of the younger generation. This is their seventh album, infected by some kind of enigma, mostly because album has two names. One name is We Are Like Love Songs, and the other one is acronym Walls.

Those who are familiar with King Of Leon discography can see clearly why this is the album’s title as the band has been playing love lemonades with big choruses for quite some time now. Stadium anthems are omnipresent on this record as well. Although the band was about to break up a couple of years ago, this album showcases that they can create music with their formula and offer us whatever they want.

First single Waste A Moment sounded as the band is going to play with guitars in a way they had played them at the beginning of career. Unfortunately, this was an exception because the rest of the album is made by recipe, the same one that produced Only By The Night and Come Around Sundown. It wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing If they have continued in the direction of Mechanical Bull, but Kings Of Leon aimed to broaden their horizons. Instead, they have limited their creativity to the mainstream simulacrum.

The first and the last song perfectly represent Kings Of Leon. Waste A Moment could connect their early fanbase with the contemporary one, since the combination of both of their phases is effective here. It’s a hit song, no doubt about that.

On the other hand, Walls is the most minimal, chill song that the band has ever created. In this ballade, Caleb is bursting with vulnerability, making it a bit cheesy, but just enough to make some girls cry at the parking lot.

The rest of the record balances between U2 and Red Hot Chilli Peppers, especially in the track Around The World, which stands as their worst song yet.  Reverend, Find Me and Over resemble typical American mainstream saturated with U2. Those are the kinds of songs that will help them score ephemeral fame. Over is overproduced.

Overall: everything Kings Of Leon release can be a hit. I don’t have to tell you that is not a good thing by default.
