With over one billion records sold there is no doubt that The Beatles are one of the greatest bands ever to exist. Everyone knows and loves them for their beautiful melodies and unique music style. Each time you listen to one of their songs it’s as if you have been immersed into magical world of music from the 60’s. In their album "Abbey Road” they released seventeen tracks, each song being different in its own way. One of the tracks titled “Golden Slumbers” is, in my opinion, one of the greatest Beatles songs.
The lyrics in the song weren’t actually written by Paul McCartney, “That's Paul, apparently from a poem he found in a book, some eighteenth-century book where he just changed the words here and there” – John Lennon. The lyrics were actually taken from a poem by Thomas Dekker (1570-1632) that Paul had found from over 400 years ago.
Golden slumbers kiss your eyes, Smiles awake you when you rise; Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry, And I will sing a lullaby, Rock them, rock them, lullaby.
Care is heavy, therefore sleep you, You are care, and care must keep you; Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry, And I will sing a lullaby, Rock them, rock them, lullaby.
(Thomas Dekker)
As for the beautiful melody, Paul found it in his sister’s music book while playing piano in his dad’s house. He was flipping through the music book when he stumbled upon the song titled “Golden Slumbers”.” I can't read music and I couldn't remember the old tune, so I just started playing my own tune to it. I liked the words so I kept them, and it fitted with another bit of song I had.” – Paul McCartney.
If you haven’t ever listened to the song I would advise you to do so if you love music at all. Prepare yourself to become lost within the melody.
