The Kids Are Alright

If you happened to watch the pre-Superbowl festivities and caught a wonderful rendition of “America the Beautiful,” or the “Where is the Love” performance / tribute to Donny Hathaway at this year’s Grammy’s, you probably discovered talented R&B sister duo, Chloe x Halle. Primarily posting YouTube videos or starring in the TV show, Grown-ish, I’ll be the first to admit that I was late to the party and discovered them during their Grammy tribute performance. But ever since I heard their incredible harmonies, I haven’t been able to stop playing their music. Upon discovering them, I also realized just how underrated these two are.

At only 19 and 18 years of age, Chloe and Halle Bailey already show an unbelievable amount of maturity with their style, music, and lyrics. Their debut album, The Kids Are Alright earned critical praise, resulting in a Best New Artist nomination at this year’s Grammy’s. I love that they don’t follow typical radio trends and have released music that stay true to their artistry. Although they’ve received praise from critics, the public still has yet to discover them. Their title track, “The Kids Are Alright” serves as a reminder that millennials / our youth are continuing the fight for a better future; that the future will be in good hands. They sing, “Turn around and show you, I could bless you with some culture,” as a way of reiterating not to underestimate the youth. With unique beats and gorgeous harmonies and vocals, their debut album also features songs of culture and female empowerment. If they continue to pave the way for the future of music and culture, I’m excited for what’s to come.
