DNCE bring it on with Rod Stewart

Rod Stewart’s “Do You Think I’m Sexy?!” was originally released in 1978 and has already been recorded by many artists, many times. It has been proven to be a flexible song that would lend itself to various genres. Throughout the years the title even started changing a little bit to sound even sexier and there would be no better group than DNCE to take the song into this generation.

When I first heard about DNCE collaborating with Rod Stewart on “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?!” I immediately got excited. DNCE have a habit of making everything sound funky and I expected them to bring an insane amount of energy to the track, but instead they added soul to it, too.

In the beginning of the song, the feel reminds me of groovy, funky soul tracks you know from artists like Robin Thicke or Justin Timberlake, without the high falsetto though. Along the way it picks up on energy and the end is just one big party.

DNCE have really made this song their own, but Rod himself has also managed to set this new version to his own hand. He’s let go of the original version and embraced this one. Even though most covers of the song had to do without him, it is the second time that he has featured on a new version of the song. In the 90s, he also featured on a eurodance version of the song by N-Trance.

Because the first verse and the first chorus is sung by Joe, I was already wondering where Rod would come in and how he would sound on this track. The raspy vocals already contain the type of soul that works for a lot of classics, but I didn’t know if it would fit on this smooth, funky sound. He can pull that off, too.

DNCE have performed the song live with Rod on several occasions, but as far as I can tell there are no plans to promote the song together.
