Ed Sheeran - Switching Styles but Still Keeping the Ed(ge)

It’s finally time we move over from the Latin rhythms and catchy hook lines of “Despacito”, because no matter how much we love good music - new music just totally excites us, right? 2017 already seems to have been the year for popular chartbusters and if there is one person who can dethrone Bieber it shall be none other than  - Ed Sheeran! Even with the dancy beats of “Shape of You” fresh on our minds, we are all set to explore new pastures and new music with him. The singer has recently dropped the video for his latest number “Bibia Be Ye Ye”, and both the video and the song are refreshing enough to grab attention.

Sheeran’s latest album “Divide” has been a glorious experiment in itself where the artist has chosen to step away from his signature acoustic ballads and soft pop numbers - to more mainstream pop and dabbling with different styles and beats.  With “Bibia Be Ye Ye”, Ed proves that he isn’t afraid or apprehensive to try out different styles. Because that’s what makes the essence of pop music so beautiful - the ability to mix all kinds of cultural flavors and mainstream ideas to create sounds that masses relate to and enjoy.  Here we see Ed drawing inspiration African beats and rhythm and we must say, the African way of life is quite infectious.

The song is cheerful and instant pick me up, which makes me think it is going to catch up in no time! Not to mention it is also super catchy!

The words “Bibia Be Ye Ye’ which is in Twi language from Ghana, translates to “All will be well”. So, yes this might very well be Ed Sheeran’s answer to “Happy” and the next song on our playlist especially reserved for the purpose of turning that bad day into a good one!

And the video too requires special mention - even with the absence of Ed Sheeran himself. It is not always seen that popstars choose to stay away from screen time on their own videos, because it does contribute a great deal to garner the views. But Ed seems confident on this one, and the video seems more grounded this way. Moreover, Ed’s voice is enough to make fans stand up and take a notice!

Pop has been instrumental in bridging gaps between culture from taking influences out of music from different nations. While Justin Bieber and Luis Fonsi did it with Spanish, Sheeran does it with Twi. And we must say we are loving this diversity and cultural mashup to bits.
