Funky Furtado

It wasn’t all that long ago when I first blogged about Nelly Furtado. She has just collaborated on someone’s mixtape and I expected the tracks to surface, but they never did. But now, I am glad to announce that she is back!

“Behind Your Back” is the first track she’s released since 2012. Already having played around with so many genres, Nelly has now turned to a bit of funkiness. And just as with all of the other genres she has embarked on, this is no problem for her to master either.

The intro of the song reminds me of the early Hip Hop tracks you would expect in the 80s from A Tribe Called Quest or De La Soul, but it doesn’t take too long for the song to fully reach its potential. The song quickly gets retro, soulish and funky with some great bass lines and synthesizers. It’s kind of like the 70s and 80s are mixed into one song and updated at the same time. I also hear a pretty good live track in this song, that would be amazing to see her perform live. Pretty cool! Pretty well done.

Still, I feel like her comeback is quietly slipping by. With my first blog about her, I was pretty surprised to see the response to her on social media and seemed like many people were waiting and wanting her to come back. Now that a new song has been released, I kind of had to run into the news that the song was out. So, I definitely hope I turn more people to the song by blogging about it myself.

According to an interview with Nelly, a new album is expected out in November of this year and should actually feature more songs that are very well fitted for a live setting. She’s written all of the songs on it herself and has used the guitar as her first instrument of choice to write the songs with. However, she didn’t reveal whether we can expect the whole album to sound as funky as “Behind Your Back”. I have a feeling it won’t, but can’t wait to find out later in the year.
