Olly Murs first caught my attention with his retro sound. Many of his songs will always remind me of something else. For instance, "Heart Skips A Beat" reminds me of old, late 80s, Hip Hop tracks or dance songs with that influence (Soul II Soul for instance) and as for "Troublemaker", well, I just thought it was a Maroon 5 song the first few times I heard that.
More recently, I'd already heard that Olly had released a new song, "You Don't Know Love", but two days ago, he'd released the official video for it. There is a risk he took with this video, because the sea shore intro is a little bit too long for my taste and, if I weren't curious for the track, I would've clicked away and skipped his track. I'm glad I didn't though.
The video was shot in Las Vegas, on the Strip. For me it's always fun to see familiar places in videos just for the sheer joy of knowing I walked there myself a while ago. So, even though the video didn't hold any surprises for me, I really was surprised by the song. I've lost sight of Olly over the years. I did happen to see the video for "Kiss Me", when I was considering him for a blog topic back then, but that's about the only recent music I actually checked out from him.
The intro for "You Don't Know Love" was already surprising. It's slow and makes you wonder where it'll go. It uses the famous vocal effects everyone else has been using since Justin Bieber, but just when you think he may burst out in to Justin Bieber or Zayn like dance or R&B song, Olly kicks off with an energetic electro pop song.
With a strong pulse in the bass line, which is leading the song's energy, Olly reminds you exactly what love does, both in the negative as the positive side of things. The lyrics are quick to catch up on and it gets stuck in the head.
According to the rumor mill, the lyrics are probably linking to Olly's personal situation, who's split from his girlfriend (of three years) a few months ago. This is a great song to let it all out on.
