So, by now, you know that I usually get introduced to chart music when I’m in my car. It’s that moment in the day, in which I discover really cool songs at times. Just recently, I was introduced to DNCE that way.
The song, “Cake By The Ocean”, had caught my attention because it reminds me a bit of Adam Lambert in vocals, but combined with a real fun loving spirit of bands like Walk The Moon and Fun in the music.
Checking out more DNCE tracks really surprised me, because they keep that combination up in all their songs. They mix funk and rock in a way that is quite original, with little touches of everything else in there. And the band members have a lot of style, each bringing their own flavor to it.
It’s already an interesting combination to have a band with one female member in it. You don’t see that too often.
Within seconds of researching the band, I caught the “Jonas” link. And I could fill a blog about all of that, but to be honest, I really like the fact that Joe Jonas has used this opportunity to create something completely different. And yet, DNCE is as commercially appealing as can be.
Just this week, the band was performing in Amsterdam. They were doing a reasonable sized venue, but it had already proven too small for them. The band attracted a lot of fans, so every radio station was giving away tickets to those lucky few, who couldn’t get some of their own. I’m sure next year, they’ll be back to perform at a bigger venue.
Until then, they’ll be hitting the road with Selena Gomez, so in her honor, they’d covered “Hands To Myself” while being in England doing the popular Live Lounge for Radio One. They’d slightly altered it to their own sound, which makes it an interesting version to listen to.
During one of the interviews they’d done, while being in The Netherlands, they explained what “Cake By The Ocean” actually means. I already thought that was an odd line. But apparently it’s what people confuse the drink Sex On The Beach with. Hmm, only in the States then….
As a song, it is the ultimate beach party song though. Great for the summer nights that are bound to come.
