It’s been said many times. Carly Rae Jepsen was supposed to be a one hit wonder. In fact, she was set to become the ultimate one hit wonder with “Call Me Maybe”, but has managed to avoid that, by making more bubbly pop songs, just as strong as the song that must have been played throughout all of 2012. It’s got more of us, Kurrent Music bloggers, talking about her and her evolution as a pop artist.
She’s come a long way and made some very interesting choices in her way. One of them being, playing Frenchy in Fox’s Grease: Live. Now, it’s not just her music, but also some acting that has made her an interesting pop star to keep your eye on.
This week - looking like a new generation Pat Benetar (Google her and see the resemblance), she has released the video for “Boy Problems”.
It’s the kind of pop tune that reminds you of the 80s, in every way. It’s funky, she’s got a squeaky voice and the lyrics lollipop sweet. It’s really her trademark sound, even more so in her latest work.
Becoming such an ambassador of a retro sound, it was not much of a surprise that she was asked to sing the title tune of “Fuller House”, recently. The sitcom is a spin off from the old “Full House” series and includes most of the original cast.
But that’s drifiting off to another topis. The new song, “Boy Problems”, is not as memorable as “Call Me Maybe”, which you could seriously sing the whole day through, after hearing it once. But, it is catchy. And even though, we really need to get a new strong song like some of her biggest hits from her, this song is not yet it.
To make sure we can still remember the words to this song a day after hearing it first, she’s conveniently repeating the words “Boy Problems” at the end of every sentence. No way you could forget what you are listening to. It is what makes the hook to this song.
But I get her frustration. All girls know this by heart – girlfriends who you know are going through a hard time and you know you have to support them, but you just didn’t expect their boy problems to be so ongoing, that it gets to be very inconvenient. Oh well, the stuff we do for our friends, right?
Luckily, Carly Rae is making it fun to listen to this topic in the song and the video is good fun to watch too. Still reminding me a little bit of Grease somehow. It’s just got such a pajama party vibe to it.
