Sometimes, chasing after a person is like catching butterflies.
You want to hold them in your hands but you are afraid of them dying and if you chase them too much, maybe they will fly away. Away from you.
BTS, 방탄소년단,“Bangtan Sonyeondan”, a Korean boy band widely known in Asian music for their infectious dance tracks such as “Dope” or in Korean, “Joreol” and their ultra-synchronized dance steps has recently released their new album “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.2”. Their new album released on November 30, 2015 features tracks such as “Run,” “Ma City,” “Whalien 52,” “Dead Leaves,” “Baebsae,” “House of Cards” and the song “Butterfly” which I would recommend to all music enthusiasts who would want to try listening to songs of other languages rather than English alone.
Composed of seven members namely, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Rap Monster, Jimin, V, Jungkook, this boy band never failed to amaze me through the depth of their song lyrics, the orchestra allure of their blended voices, and their mind-boggling music videos
This song is mostly about falling in love with someone who cannot be ever yours-- maybe because of the situations surrounding the two of you. This one is perfect for those star-crossed lovers such as the likes of Romeo and Juliet or Pyramus and Thisbe. This song also speaks about the emotions left after a hurtful break-up; when only one person held on for too long. It’s like that special someone is there, so near yet so far. It is also a suitable song for people experiencing what we call “friendzone” or even to those who are afraid to be put in that context.
As the opening lyrics sung by Jungkook say: Don’t think of anything. Don’t say anything, not even a word. Just give me a smile.
It is obvious that the persona telling these words is clearly still affectionate but is accepting that he or she is in the losing side of a war called “love.” The meaning could also depend on the listener’s personal experiences on what he or she is going through right at the very moment. Using a simile the person whom the persona is talking about is being compared to a butterfly: You’re just like a butterfly. From afar, I steal glances; if we touch hands, will I lose you? These lines are told by a person who is too afraid of trying it out with another person or to let his or her emotions to take over because important bonds such as friendship will be at stake.
Even though Korean music is not that popular as songs which land on the top of the Billboard Charts, I know that music can transcend language for their songs’ motifs and themes are universal. Despite the difficulty in understanding the language, you can disappear into certain wonderlands chasing butterflies when listening to this song.
