Sometimes you just need a little bit of beat. You’re halfway through the day, and a push is needed, but just a gentle one; a simple song with a subtle kick in its step to keep you going. So basically, what you’re looking for is Brother by The Brilliance.
The beat is led by a deep but gentle bass drum that’s eventually joined by crisp snares and an elegant piano. The voice of lead singer, David Gungor, has a soulful tone which he employs gently for the majority of the song, yet passionately all the same.
The lyrics go as so:
When I look into the face
Of my enemy
I see my brother
I see my brother (4x)
Forgiveness is the garment of our courage
The power to make the peace we long to know
Open up our eyes to see the wounds that bind
all of humankind
May our shutter hearts greet the dawn of life
with charity and love
When I look into the face of my enemy
I see my brother
I see my brother (5x)
It’s as simple as that. The only variation of the entire song is the bridge. But it’s not so simple at once. This little creation is jam-packed with depth and meaning. It sounds like a lighthearted indie tune at first, but one good listen to the words and you realize there’s something deep Gungor is facing. The lyrics reveal a strong Christian faith as he addresses a difficult reality that this faith holds true: that all human beings are brothers and sisters, whether it’s in their favor or not; that as a Christian, one is called to show grace and forgiveness to their “enemies” as they remember the sacrifice of Jesus.
Wow.
Christian or not, it’s a unique song with beauty and power, sung by a man whose voice invites you – almost convinces you, to forgive and to love, even those whom you deem the worst.
