The Wounded Kings

The Wounded Kings are a traditional doom metal/psych doom band from the UK, who have released a number of good albums through the years. Their most notable albums are perhaps their two earliest albums The Shadow Over Atlantis and especially Embrace Of The Narrow House. The Wounded Kings are a pretty straight forward doom metal band with some occult doom, stoner doom and psychedelic rock influences. They were female fronted for a while as well, but that was not the case on their earlier albums, which are more to my liking.

Their first album Embrace Of The Narrow house manages to be consistently good, with tracks like Melanthos and The Private Labyrinth being the best of the lot. The vocals in parts reminding The Kings of Frog Island as well, which is great in my book again. The Private Labyrinth might just as well be one of my favorite doom/stoner doom tracks of all time. Their second album manages to be almost as equally good, with the only problem being that there doesn't seem to be a particularly noteworthy track, as all of them are pretty similar. This means that they are pretty good, but also not great. The same can roughly be said of the later albums. Their first album however is a real killer in the doom realm.

All in all The Wounded Kings are one of the more consistent occult doom or traditional doom metal bands currently out there, and although I am not particularly fond of the female fronted era The Wounded Kings, then they are still a noteworthy band even when only their earlier albums are taken into account.
