It was in 1992. The Red Hot Chili Peppers made a break in his tour of Europe to travel to New York, where would be presented in the Saturday Nigh Live. The band had just released their album Blood Sugar Sex Magik, an undisputed classic for the group, and it was necessary that showcase to reach more people.
However, relations in the group were not good. Guitarist John Frusciante began to behave erratically. And also he abused drugs, especially heroin.
What perhaps was not known to most audiences, inevitably it became popular during the appearance of the musicians in the US program. They played "Under the Bridge", one of the album's singles, appropriate for a Saturday night. Calm, serene, yet sad and reflective time. But no, each note carried Frusciante to ennui. He started playing different, as if to say I do not care about this band and their famous songs, nor the people who ask and applauds. Fuck you all!
The singer, Anthony Kiedis, tried to hide his annoyance, but could not. First he was hesitant, but then he was already angry. He knows that his partner did on purpose. He is sabotaging the show to make clear their mood, their nonconformity.
Several years later, in 2004, he came Kiedis biography, titled Scar Tissue, as the song on the album Californication. In the book, he referred to that moment starring guitarist, who later would leave the Red Hot Chili Peppers for a few years.
"They had not gone five minutes when John started fighting with the staff. The music supervisor made a comment totally harmless. John turned around and said that he turned to say something, not do 'the show` cursed. The plan was to play 'Under the Bridge' as the second song, an issue that has always been a challenge for me. It depended on him for entry. When we did the test, he began playing on a different note, he detuned basically began to reinvent the song. "
"The show began. We made our first issue, "Stone Cold Bush". It went right. Then it was the turn of "Under the Bridge". I was told that he had used heroin, but could have been on another planet, because he started playing crap I had never heard before. I had no idea of the song that was playing or the key that was. It looked like he was in a different world. Until today, John denies that. According to him, it was experiencing as if we were in a trial. Well, we were not rehearsing, we were on live television in front of millions of people, and was torture. I started singing in what I thought was the note, it was not. I felt like I was stabbed in the back ".
