The legendary British musician David Bowie, author of classics like "Starman" and "Space Oddity" has died at age 69 of cancer, reported Monday its Facebook page. According to this message the artist who popularized the "glam rock" in the 70s and 80s, died last Sunday "serenely, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle against cancer 18 months."

"Although many of you will share with us this loss, we ask respect for the privacy of the family during the match , " adds the note, which also ran the official Twitter of Bowie. His son, filmmaker Duncan Jones, confirmed by his share the news on the social network. "I'm sorry to say it's true. I'll be offline for a while. Much love to everyone," he wrote.

The singer and multi - instrumentalist, known for his androgynous and enigmatic image especially in its period of greatest success, released his latest album last Friday, coinciding with his 69th birthday.
