With only 22 years, Jacob Collier already became a Grammy award winner (and guess what, not only one but he won two Grammys for his Debut Album!). For sure there is a good reason why he got them. The album is a true masterpiece. An astonishing piece of music that is hard to imagine that a 22-year-old "boy" from London is capable of being the performer, composer as well as the producer. If somebody tells me to say only a few words about this man it is almost impossible to do it. Jacob is "one of the few" complete artists on the big screen. He plays more than 5 instruments including a Harmonizer (for his Voice), drums, piano, guitar, bass guitar, Contrabass etc. He is also doing a great job, producing his own music. Colier is the real guru when it comes to music harmony progressions, and he is well known for using his harmonizer to produce more that 10 Voices, and at the same time spreading some "magic" in the air for the audience.
“In My Room” is the title track of the album, which is originally by the Beach Boys. Jacob’s cover version is so much different. It is really nice to see how he is playing with all the elements, with a lot of improvisations and creative solutions for the many instruments that are included.
“Hideaway” is the first track that Jacob composed for the album. In many interviews, he says that this is the track that is the “special one” because from there it all started. The track lasts nearly 7 min and has a stunning harmony progressions with a lot of emotional and different kind of mood transitions.
On the album, there is also the “Flintstones” theme song (this track won a Grammy for the best arrangement for instruments and vocals). Nobody has ever done this kind of covers in the world, at least for my knowledge.
My personal favorite is “In the Real Early Morning”. This song has a wonderful melody and harmony. It’s a very peaceful ballad song that can easily bring tears to your eyes. There is something magical in it, I believe that is a pure emotion and the sincere love that Jacob is carrying with him.
What I love about this album is that after listening to the whole album I thought that I had a “face to face” conversation with this guy! I find this album really intimate and I totally agree with the name of it (“In my Room”). It’s like, if you want to find out who is Jacob Collier than this is a great way to do it! He made a beautiful mixture of many Genres!
